As part of our efforts to promote the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at SPSU, we will be continuing the book club in 2013-14 at the Center of Teaching Excellence (CTE). The club will meet every other week to discuss what is expected from an instructor and how they can improve their teaching and student learning, while converting this into a scholarship. Come join us every Monday from 12noon-12:50pm at the CTE to discuss the topics with other fellow member.

The book club is open to all faculty members. All participants will be provided a copy of the book. In my opinion, the biggest value of joining the club is the teaching related discussion and the exchange of ideas that will take place. Feel free to contact me via email (akhalid2@spsu.edu) if you have any questions.
Learning Outcomes

In Fall 2013 members of the book club will read the book titled ‘How Learning Works' by Susan Ambrose and others. The book club will meet every Monday from 12pm-1pm in the CTE.

Learning Outcomes:
After attending the book club meetings, participants will learn the following about the best teachers:
• How does student prior knowledge affect their learning?
• How does the way students organize knowledge affect their learning?
• What factors motivate students to learn?
• How do students develop mastery?
• What kind of practice and feedback enhance learning?
• Why do student development and course climate matter for student learning?
• How do students become self-directed learners?
